Two Coasts, One Pocket
Joaquin grew up on Oakland's jazz and Latin rhythms and carried them across the country to New York.
He is a 19-year-old Mexican American drummer and percussionist, currently studying music at The New School in New York City. Raised in Oakland, California, he splits his year between the two cities, spending summers back in the Bay and the rest in New York's club and session scene.
Behind the kit he plays with a deep, conversational swing and a percussionist's ear for texture. He moves comfortably between straight-ahead jazz, Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, funk, and contemporary improvised music, on drum set as well as congas, cajón, and hand percussion.
He is available for live dates, recording sessions, sideman work, and clinics on both coasts.
